Veer-Zaara

“Tum chupa na sakogi main woh raaz hoon
Tum bhula na sakogi woh andaaz hoon
Gunjata hoon jo dil mein toh hairaan ho kyun
Main tumhare hi dil ki toh aawaaz hoon”
The couplet above very aptly describes what Veer-Zaara means to me.

Veer-Zaara is the golden standard of Indian Cinema. Bhansali’s thing is spectacle. Imtiaz’s thing is characters. Anurag’s thing is realism. Yash chopra is a genre in itself. One can never imagine that the same person directed Deewar. I am 2000s kid. The first ever love story i saw was Veer-Zaara and since then only Jab tak Hai Jaan has came near it but still watching over a lot of world cinema and Desi movies. Nothing has surpassed the experience that this movie provided me.

In West, People rely on story and visual effects. Yash Chopra with his characters can do anything. He made ShahRukh Khan what he is today and SRK under Yashji’s Wings he made every character come alive whether it was Veer or Kabir or Aryan. Every Character in Veer-Zaara is impactful. The lines and monologues written by Aditya Chopra makes the characters’ on screen effect everlasting. Kiron Kher,Rani Mukherjee and my 1st grade crush Preity Zinta are the key lead actors that make the Veer-Zaara world pretty realistic. Preity may have acted in a lot of movies but the aesthetic beauty that came out in this one is just mind-numbing. The story and screenplay though feels secondary in front of the world created by YashJi but it plays its role pretty well. You cannot bind an audience for 3 hours by just great songs. The screenplay and dialogues are great and the cameos by Hema Malini And Amitabh Bachchan is just damn cute.

Now, Let’s discuss the strongest and the aspect of the film that has stood the test of time and surpassed the standards which were before it and came after that which is “The Music”. Man,The Music of Veer-Zaara is just something else. It makes the film watching experience extremely enriching. Every song and tune stays with you forever. The songs are still watched and heard by millions on youtube and songs platforms. My favorite song is Do Pal. Fun Fact: Veer-Zaara’s music was hugely influenced by Late Madan Mohan. Lata Mangeshkar gave her voice for the movie. Veer-Zaara is not just a movie its an experience.

Tamasha

'Wahi kahani Phir Ek baar, Majnu le liye kapde phadd. Maar Tamasha Beech Bazar'
Tamasha is that tamasha which goes on the lives of an average Indian male. The fight between the internal drive, passion, and expectations. Everybody wants original but putting a kid in the age-old system of safe zoned life screws it up.

“Sometimes the only way out is through”. Tamasha is well definable by this quote. Tamasha is the traditional and the most common story that is never told. The movie full-fledged preaches the idea of storytelling but this is not its only theme, the emotional resistance that the youth go through is strong and very aptly conveyed by this Master Imtiaz Ali. The movie is not a thriller story so don't worry about spoilers. Tamasha is beautifully shot and the performances by Ranbir and Deepika as Ved and Tara are just fabulous. These characters are relatable in many moments. The emotions are enriching and feels natural. A.R Rahman as usual leaves his significant mark by giving Tamsha its most important aspect “Music”. The background score makes every sequence even more interesting and adds to it. The Lyrics By Irshad Kamil is also relatable at lots of levels. Chali Kahani requires a special mention because consolidating every childhood short story into a 7 minutes song that too in rhyme requires guts. Hats Off to Irshad for pulling this off. It's a must-watch because it's not only entertaining but it inherits a message that is so important that if you get it your mindset will transform at that instant. Fun Fact: The famous comedian Anshu More got so inspired by this movie that he left his high paying job as a key executive to pursue Standup comedy.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

“How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd.”
If you are a bit confused about what does the above statement mean, don’t worry its literally really difficult to understand.

“Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind” is a deep dive into the mind of the typical 21st century human being who like any thoughtful individual finding hard to understand the world and the fellow humans living in it. Love is the main theme of this film. We all define and understand love in our own ways. Some say Shakespeare got the concept of love. Some say poetry and music capture the essence of love. But the truth is nobody has ever got it right because love is a very personal thing and only the individual who falls for someone gets what it means for him or her. The film is set in near future where if you want you can erase any specific memory or person you want from your mind. The technology and the method is mastered by a few individuals to help people relieve themselves from their baggage of grief, sorrow and pain. Joel and Clementine are among those individuals who want each other to be erased from each other’s mind . They have a history and a unique story like everyone which will be best understood if you experience it yourself. The story of their complex relationship cannot be described in words. The portrayal of Joel by Jim Carrey and of Clementine by Kate Winslet is spot on. They feel like they got in the skin of the characters pretty well. Their act seems effortless. The direction is very clean and brings everything on paper to the screen very well. Screenplay deserves a special mention because the strength of this movie is ‘the writing’ otherwise with the shaky and jump cut like feel of the film everything can go very wrong. Cinematography and the production design are the real jewels of this movie. The sets and places they have shot and the way they have shot them makes you feel exactly like one of your crazy dreams you get once in a while which feels ridiculous but is just the manifestation of the reality as the way you know it or want to know it. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is not a simple single concept story. The movie goes many places and hits a lot of notes. As you enter the movie you feel a bit confused but at it progresses and comes to a final conclusion it adds all up and leaves you emotionally moved.
